Web Database Based Inventory System
Web Database Based Inventory System Web database based inventory system is for management of items, orders, customers and payment. This system helps in Stock management, payment, and orders. This system allows conducting payment for customers and for ordered items in the purchase order. The main objective of this project is about the design of Web-based inventory system. Bakery feyasse use traditional paper based inventory system to manage his information concerning customer, ordered item, item and payment. There are several problems with this system such as time consuming, hard labour and sometimes lost of information. The sales growth and order misplacement cause a great deal of work for Bakery Feyasse. The manual system is prone to errors resulting major complaints from customers. The volume of data and complexity of analysis to be conducted seems overwhelming using their manual system which sometimes raises suspicions of returned results which are also difficult to correct or verify. After careful investigation, discussion thorough analysis of existing method, it was agreed that a new effective system is required to solve Bakery Feyasse problems. After reviewing the possible design choices, it was decided that MySQL database and PHP script language is the best economical fit for Bakery Feyasse system in terms of cost, ease of maintenance, interface design and upgradability using Microsoft windows platform. The database would be link to the companys website via PHP script language. The online server will enable employee to enter, create, update and delete information online. 1.1. Project objectives 1. To create a system that will assist the Bakery employee at their different task 2. To explore the ideas involved in the development of a web database inventory site. This web database inventory system will include the main function as following: Select data from database Update information into the database Delete information from database And add information into database The objectives of this project are: Design a relational database Implement this database Testing the new system Evaluate the system 1.2. Personal objectives My personal objective for this project is to complete the project on time. I set up a monthly time table to carry out different task. My enthusiasm is that after completing this project. I will gain more knowledge in computer technology. To enable me to succeed this project, I used the skills I gain last year in MySQL, and SQL. I also learn how to create a dynamic web site which I did not know. I learn new script language which is PHP. 1.2. 1. Career objectives Gain my BSc Honours Degree. Gain more skills in Programming language, Computing science and Information Systems Technologies. 1.2. 2. Academic objectives 1.Learn programming language such as PHP and MySQL Learn how to use PHP script language to create a form to retrieve information from website Learn how to connect MySQL Database with dynamic Website How to use PHP code to retrieve information from MySQL database How to create HTML form How to use HTML form to retrieve information from database How to create database table using MySQL application. 1.3. Project Limitations I am entirely conscious that my assignment is to create a web database system which is not an easy task and I am also aware of the short I have got to accomplish this task. So the time is my target. I am thinking of finish on time. Time management has been considered because; I also got one exam to prepare. 1.4. Gantt chart 1.5. Literature review At the start of my project, the researches have been made to gathering information because many activities go into the development of a new system. Understanding system requirements, choosing database-tier software, designing databases, and building the tier are the first steps in successful web database application development. The following issues have been explored: Information System Analysis Database Database management systems Database Server Database tier Information Systems Analysis System Analysis System Design This phase show how the system run. Prototype This phase will enable the employee to understand the functionality of the new system. Implementation Development of the new system Testing The new system is tested in order to verify its functions Database A database is a collection of related data. The data stored is rows, which make up a simple customers, items, orders and payment details. Database Management System Database Management System enables the users to retrieve relevant information. It refers to information infrastructures that compose of relevant information. Database system creates and maintains a database and enables individual business application to extract the data in order to create report. Database server Database server is a system designed to manipulate the database. Its function is to store, retrieve, and manage information. Its plays an important role in web services and provides the n-tier connection through the Internet users via their web browser. Database tier Database tier is the base of a web database application. In a three-tier architecture application, the database tier manages the data. The data management typically includes storage and retrieval of data, as well as managing updates, access by more than one middle-tier process, providing security, ensuring the integrity of data, and providing support services such as data backup. 1.6. Technical review The web based database inventory system is creating using MySQL application and PHP script language. The interface of the system is developed with Hypertext Markup Language (HTML). The system is accessible anywhere that have access to Internet. 1.6.1. Wed Based Database Systems development tools Dreamweaver CS3 Dreamweaver CS3 Dreamweaver is a full-featured Web application development tool. Its features not only assist with creation and editing Web pages, but also with managing and maintaining the entire Web site. MySQL MySQL implies the Client /Server architecture, which compose of a server process and client process. A server process manages the logical database management. A sever process takes of how the data is stored and organized. The client process would be described as process that accesses the server in order to store, retrieve, update and alter the database schema. SQL SQL (Structured Query Language) SQL used to communicate with most databases. You can manage your database, retrieve data from it, or add data to it using SQL queries. You build and send an SQL query to the database. The database responds by performing the action defined by the query or, if the database is unable to perform the requested operation, its returns error message with information about the problem. Cold Fusion ColdFusion is a tagged language, developed by Macromedia, who is also the developer of Dreamweaver. A stand-alone Web server is also included as part of ColdFusion. The stand-alone server is fine development, but you should use a more powerful Web site. ASP ASP Application Server Pages (ASP) is Microsoft technology. It built into IIS (Internet Information Server). When you use ASP technology; you have your choice of languages VBScript or JScript. When you set up your Dreamweaver site, you specify which language you want to use. 1.6.2. Web Based Database development technologies PHP PHP is a Scripting Language that is interpreted on the web server before the webpage is sent to a web browser to be displayed. This can be seen in the expanded PHP recursive acronymÃâà PHP-HypertextÃâà Pre-processor. 1.7. Technologies used 1.7.1. PHP and MySQL PHP and MySQL work in combination, where the database is MySQL and the script language is PHP. How PHP and MySQL work together? PHP collect information and MySQL store information. PHP will create retrieve information form for the system, but MySQL keep the information in a format PHP. 1.7.2. Why use PHP and MySQL PHP and MySQL combine together make easy the development of a dynamic Web page. HTML creates useful web pages with the addition of PHP and MySQL where you can collect information. 1. 8. Methodologies Approach 1.8.1. Prototyping Prototyping is most appropriate methodology for systems that include data querying, online data updating, and on-line data reporting functions. It is used to create appropriate data access interfaces for users and to help identify the capabilities that users wants in the system, such as the options on a menu used by the a system. 1.8.2. Rapid Application Development Its basic process is to get systems personnel and users together in formal meetings, where they rapidly develop systems that provide users with their information needs. 1.8.3. Chosen Methodology Prototyping Methodology Development choice has been influenced by several factors: 1. Clarify the user requirements 2. Familiarity with the base technology 3. System complexity 4. Need for the system reliability 5. Time pressure 6. Need to see progress on the time schedule. 7. And when timelines are short because they best enable me to adjust the functionality in the system on the basis of a specific delivery date. CHAPTER 2 ANALYSIS 2.1. Bakery Feyasse profile Bakery Feyasse is a Bakery that was created by Malan Kouao in 1988. The business started in 1988 with one Bakery and after continuous progress a second Bakery has been created in 2008. The diagram below show the Bakery Structure Production manager Sale manager Manager Chairman Department manager Department manager Department manager Fig: Bakerys Feyasse structure 2.2. Existing system (appendices) The Bakery use traditional paper based where the employee checks the availability of the items by querying the items books, and fills the book by using paper and pen. Moreover the ordering process is made by pen and hand and it is time consuming to contact the production and it causes slow moving for the customer order and there is risk of mistake caused by the employee. All employee access the same data, share the same information .The salesperson check the availability of the items by querying the production department. The production department check the availability of the items from the book register manually. After knowing the availability, he fills up the availability book manually so that the salesperson will know which item is available. The account manager checks the stock items manually in order to re order the product. The information about the item, the customers, and the suppliers is kept in a temporary contact book 2.2. Current Systems The proposed system is a web based inventory system. The staff of each department can work peacefully at their department. The system allows the staff to fill up the order payment, the order, the item order form. The objective of the new system is to create an online access database to store all data concerning the Bakery. The main activities performed by the system are. The system provides data processing and storage. The system display system functionality. The system functionality is accessible by clicking selected task. The system will allow the staff to insert information through the selected page. The system will allow the staff to cancel information. The system will allow the staff to process a payment. The system will allow the staff to update information. 2.2.1. Benefits with current system 1. To increase the good organisation in item availability, customers details, orders, ordered items and payment data inputting by using database system. 2. Salespersons will be able to view the list of items produced by the production department anytime 3. Customers details can be kept 4. Order can be kept for future monthly report. System Requirement Analysis At this stage I met the user to obtain a detailed understanding of Bakery needs. A functional specification, process model, logical model are defined. System Specification The system would enable end-users (employee) to create, update information All information about customer, item, order and payment will be stored in a database, which the web database inventory system will display through different interfaces Allows the deletion and appends information Facility to query the database Enables the manipulation of sales activities Tracking user activities using the system 2.4. Use Cases Select order/customer details Add order/customer details Delete order/customer details Update order/customer details Use cases description (appendices) CHAPTER 3DESIGN 3.1. Architectural Design Logical design Physical design 3.1.1. Entities and Attributes Bakery Feyasse will have a relational database system with the following entities and attributes. customer (cust_id, cust_name, cust_address,cust_city) order(order_id,cust_id*,item_id*, quantity,item_price, total_price) payment(order_id*,payment_id, payment_type, payment_description, amount) item(item_id ,item_name, item_price, item_description) 3.1.2. Connecting To Database In order to issue MySQL data manipulation statements, we must specify a username, a password and a database to use. This information will have been provided by your systems adminsistrator. If you are running MySQL yourself, then skip ahead to the section onÃâà Creating a Database in Part 6Ãâà then come back to this point. Either way you should now have in your possession a database name, a valid password for that database and a password. For the purposes of these workshops the following example values will be used. Database Name vworksDB Valid MySQL Username vworks Password mypass In order to log into MySQL correctly we must pass information to the MySQL client program when we start it. This is done with the following commands and syntax. $ mysql -u -p 3.1.2. Database Design using MySQL MySQL database is made up of database which contains tables. A table is a section of the database for storing information. mysql> show columns from item; ++-++++-+ | Field | Type | Null | Key | Default | Extra | ++-++++ | item_id | int(11) | NO | PRI | NULL | auto_increment | | item_name | varchar(50) | YES | | NULL | | | item_price | float(6,2) | YES | | NULL | | | item_description | text | YES | | NULL | | ++-++++-+ mysql> show columns from order; a refaire +-+-++++-+ | Field | Type | Null | Key | Default | Extra | ++-++++-+ | order_id | int(11) | YES | | NULL | | | item_id | varchar(50) | YES | | NULL | | | quantity | int(11) | YES | | NULL | | | item_price | float(6,2) | YES | | NULL | | | total_price | float(6,2) | YES | | NULL | | +-+-++++- mysql> show columns from customer; ++-++++-+ | Field | Type | Null | Key | Default | Extra | ++-++++-+ | cust_id | int(11) | NO | PRI | NULL | auto_increment | | cust_name | varchar(20) | YES | | NULL | | | cust_address | varchar(20) | YES | | NULL | | | cust_city | varchar(25) | YES | | NULL | | | cust_phone | varchar(25) | YES | | NULL | | ++-++++-+ mysql> show columns from payment; ++-++++ | Field | Type | Null | Key | Default | Extra ++-++++ | payment_id | int(11) | NO | PRI | NULL | auto_increment | order_id | int(11) | YES | | NULL | | order_date | date | YES | | NULL | | payment_type | varchar(10) | YES | | NULL | | payment_description | varchar(20) | YES | | NULL | | amount | float(6,2) | YES | | NULL | ++-++++ 3.4. Database Normalisation (Appendices) 1NF customer(cust_id,cust_name,cust_address,cust_city) order (order_id, cust_id*,item_id*, quantity, item_price,total_price) payment(order_id*,payment_id,payment_type,payment_description,amount) 2NF customer(cust_id,cust_name,cust_address,cust_city) order (order_id,cust_id*,quantity,total_price) payment(order_id*,payment_id,payment_type,payment_description,amount) item(item_id ,item_name, item_price,item_description) 3NF customer(cust_id,cust_name,cust_address,cust_city) ordered_item(order_id,quantity,total_price) payment(order_id*,payment_id,amount) item(item_id ,item_name, item_price, item_description) payment_type(payment_type,payment_description) 3.5. Entity Relationship There are three kinds of relationship. One-to-one relationship means that one of each thing is used in the relationship One-to-many relationship means one row in one table is linked to many row in another table. Many-to-many relationship means many rows in one table are linked to many rows in another table. 3.5. SQL QUERIES Talking to Databases Using SQL SQL is an abbreviation for Structured Query Language. It is a surprising natural language that allows us to talk to relational databases, such as MySQL, to request and modify data. It also allows us to get information about and modify the framework that contains the data, databases themselves, and tables within them. The queries formed with SQL can range from the simple to the very complex, which makes it an extremely powerful tool for working with data Inserting, Updating, Selecting and Deleting. Insert data into database table The INSERT INTO statement is used to add new record in a table. Syntax INSERT INTO table_name VALUES (value1, value2à ¢Ã¢â ¬Ã ¦) [reference] mysql> INSERT INTO CUSTOMERS VALUES( -> 10,Gnahore Hortense,34 webster road,Bermondsey), -> (11,Kouakou Nkruma,10 salisbury court,London); mysql> SELECT * FROM CUSTOMERS; ++++ | CustID | NAME | ADDRESS | CITY ++++ | 10 | Gnahore Hortense | 34 webster road | Bermondsey | 11 | Kouakou Nkruma | 10 salisbury court | London ++++ Select data from a database table. The SELECT statement is used to select data from a database. Syntax SELECT column_name [reference] FROM table_name mysql> SELECT * FROM CUSTOMERS; ++++ | CustID | NAME | ADDRESS | CITY ++++ | 10 | Gnahore Hortense | 34 webster road | Bermondsey | 11 | Kouakou Nkruma | 10 salisbury court | London ++++ Update data in a database existing records in a table. The UPDATE statement is used to modify data in a table. Syntax UPDATE table_name SET column1=value, column2=value2à ¢Ã¢â ¬Ã ¦ [Reference] WHERE some_column=some_value. mysql> UPDATE CUSTOMERS -> SET ADDRESS =45 clement road -> WHERE CustID =11; Delete data in a database The DELETE FROM statement is used to delete records from a database. Syntax DELETE FROM table_name WHERE some_column= some value [reference] 3.6. Web Database Structure Home page Description of home page: 3.6.1. Menu structure BAKERY FEYASSE MAIN MENU CUSTOMER ITEM ORDER PAYMENT Page description: 3.6.1.1. Order page structure BAKERY FEYASSE ORDER SELECT ORDER ADD ORDER UPDATE ORDER DELETE ORDER Page description: 3.6.1.2. Select Order page 3.6.1.3. Add Order Page 3.6.1.4. Update Order page 3.6.1.5. Delete Order page SQL is not exclusive to MySQL, nor should it be mistaken as being a part of PHP. Its also not the only database query language out there. It is, however, the most popular. If you learn how to speak SQL, that knowledge translates to a range of other popular database products. Working with Existing Databases through PHP Whether you are using PHP and MySQL, or another combination, the same basic procedure for working with a database applies. First, a connection to the database server is established. This connection usually lasts for the lifetime of the running script. Additionally, as you will later see, there are instances where they can be contiguous across scripts. Next, a specific database is selected to work with. Only one database at a time can be selected per connection, but you can switch to different databases without terminating the connection. You can also have multiple connections established within the script, each with an independent selected database. Finally, once you have a connection established and a database selected, you can begin to work with the tables within them by using SQL to issue various commands. Data can be retrieved, added, modified, or deleted, and changes can be made to the selected database itself. When finished, the connection to the database server is terminated manually with mysql_close(), or automatically with the end of the script. Lets take a closer look at each step separately Things to Remember MySQL is a popular relational database product SQL is a language used to communiate with MySQL (and other databases). It allows information to be retrevied, modified, and deleted. It also provides a means to modify databases and tables. Databases are similiar to associative arrays. Each database can contain one or more tables. Each table is composed of records divided into fields. Working with a database through a PHP script follows this basic process: Connect to the server, select a database, perform any queries on the database, close the connection. SELECT, INSERT, UPDATE, and DELETE make up SQLs data manipulation commands. The data retreived from a table can be limited in different ways: Specific columns can be returned by including them within the query, the WHERE clause can be used to to include or exclude specific records, and LIMIT can cap the number of entries that are returned. Results can be sorted using the ORDER BY clause. By default, String Type fields are sorted alphabetically; Numeric Type fields are sorted from smallest to largest. When creating a new table in a database, a unique table name must be specified. In addition, a name, field type, and length are defined for each column in the table. In almost every case, a table should have an AUTO_INCREMENT Primary ID column defined. All of PHPs MySQL handling functions return FALSE if there is an error in the query or the query fails. Using mysql_error() returns the exact error reported by MySQL. Connecting to MySQL Just like a multi-user computer system or an FTP server, MySQL allows different user accounts to be established with individual levels of access. To establish a connection to MySQL, three pieces of information are required: the hostname of the database server, the username for the account, and the associated password. This information is passed to the mysql_connect() function, which attempts to establish the connection: $connect = mysql_connect(hostname,username,password); The function returns a value TRUE on success, and FALSE on failure, so it is useful (though not necessary) to assign the function to a variable. In the above example, $connect is used. It can be evaluated to avoid performing any additional queries if the connection attempt failed: if ($connect==FALSE) { print Database connection failed; exit; } It is also useful to store the results in a variable because the function returns a unique connection identifier upon success. The variable then can be passed to any of PHPs MySQL handling functions (typically as the second parameter) to specify thatÃâà thisÃâà database connection should be used, as opposed to any other active ones within the script. Selecting a Database Once a connection is set up, the next step is to select a database. To do this, all that is needed is the name of an existing database: mysql_select_db(database); As with mysql_connect(), this function returns TRUE or FALSE depending on whether the database was successfully selected. To specify which connection the function should use, we can pass a connection identifier to the function: mysql_select_db(database,$connect); Without the second parameter, the function uses the database connection that was last established within the script. Querying the Database The mysql_query() function is essentially a PHP wrapper for performing SQL commands. Any valid and complete SQL statement can be passed as a parameter to this function. Four types of queries make up SQLs data manipulation statements. They are as follows: SELECT, UPDATE, INSERT, and DELETE. SELECT The SELECT query is used to retrieve data from one or more tables within a database. As youll learn later, we can also select data from multiple tables using Table Joins, but the simplest type of SELECT statement works with only one table at a time. The syntax looks like this: SELECT * FROM users Essentially, this statement says, Select all the fields in all the rows of the table called users. The asterisk is a wild card character that tells MySQL that it should grab anything available in the specified tables. To request this data from a PHP script, we pass the query to the mysql_query () function. Because we are expecting records to be returned from the database, the function must be assigned to a variable. The query is a string, so PHP requires it to be surrounded by quotes. (Variables are often passed as part of queries and SQL requires that string values in WHERE clauses and INSERT statements be surrounded with single quotes. Though single quotes can be used here, it is generally preferable to use double quotes for clarity.) $result = mysql_query (SELECT * FROM users); Just like mysql_connect () and mysql_select_db (), this function will return FALSE if there is an error in the SQL. If the function is successful, however, $result will hold a resource identifier. Because the variable just holds an identifier, we cannot get any of our records by outputting $result. To get the data, we need to pass the result to another PHP function, mysql_fetch_array (). This function returns an array of each record from a SELECT query, line by line. Unless you know for a fact that your query will only return a single record, it is advisable to use a while loop to itinerate through each row of the result set. The function maintains an internal place mark of which record it is on, so the loop will terminate once all of the records have been returned. Lets return to our sample database from the start of the article and the select statement above to see how you would output the data: while ($row = mysql_fetch_array($result)) { Ãâà Ãâà Ãâà Ãâà print $row[id].,.$row[name].,.$row[email].; } Notice that the array indexes of $row match the column names of the table. The array generated by mysql_fetch_array() can optionally be an associative or a numeric array. By default, records are accessible by both types of keys. So, the id column (the first column in the table) can be accessed as $row[id] or $row[0]; INSERT INSERT is used to add a new record to a table. The syntax looks like this: mysql_query(INSERT INTO users (id,name, email) VALUES(,Name, [emailprotected]'); By now, the first part of this query should look fairly familiar to you. It begins with the SQL command we are going to perform, in this case INSERT. Because we are inserting a new record, INTO is included, followed by the name of the table we are adding it to. The first set of parentheses surrounds a list of the fields within the table. These must be listed in the same order that they occur in the actual table. The second portion defines the values that are going to be added. They must match the order of the fields within the query and the table for them to be inserted in the proper location. Like the field names, SQL requires that each value be surrounded by quotes, because they are strings. If there is no value to be inserted, the position for the value must still be reserved by using empty quotes. If you are inserting values for all of the fields, the field listing may be left out: mysql_query(INSERT INTO users VALUES(,Name, [emailprotected]'); MySQL will insert the values into the columns in the order that they appear. Effect of Migration on Development of Northern Ghana
Effect of Migration on Development of Northern Ghana Migration has been an age-long activity which has been going on in different forms and continues to be a vital component of individual and societal development through acquisition and transfer of knowledge and resources. Migration is a global phenomenon which continues to dominate the scenes around the world, while some form of migration is been promoted for economic reasons, other forms face strict restrictions. Migratory movement within and beyond regional boundaries across has been enhanced through globalization and advancement in modern technology (Koser, K 2008). In Ghana migration is a common activity throughout all the regions, tribes and family with almost every single family having either an international migrant or internal migrant. This picture reflects in the Northern region of Ghana in a very alarming manner with many young and able bodies migrating to prominent cities in such of improved livelihood. Background of the study area. Northern region of Ghana lies between the two upper regions and the Brong Ahafo region and Volta region. It has Tamale as the regional capital with eighteen districts assemblies. The region is characterized by one rainy season with an annual rainfall of about 750 to 1050mm. The rainy season starts around May through to October and the dry season from November to April. The climatic conditions and vegetation type are classified under dry savanna, the regions environmental conditions are highly influenced by its proximity to the Sahara desert which account for the poor soil type dry weather condition. The economic activity which is predominant in the region is Agriculture; it employs about eighty percent of the population in the region. With one main farming season, as agriculture in Ghana largely depends on rainfall patterns, the region relies on its rain season for cultivation. The main crops grown in the region such as maize, millet, cowpeas, groundnut, sorghum, cassava, rice and yam are cultivated on subsistence bases. They mostly use labour intensive methods of farming with the simple farm tools and implement. The region has been behind its southern peers in terms of development for far too long. It is also viewed deprived with limited natural resources to fuel its development process. The south can boast of coastal resource, good soil, with rich mineral and forest resources that accounts for the attractiveness to colonial masters then and investors now. Therefore developments in modern infrastructure and economic activities have been centrally focused in the south which may be attributed to the frequent out migration from the Northern region to no other destination but to the south The region has historically been faced with out migration, since the pre-colonial era. From the colonial era the north served as labour pool where the needed labour force were fished out to feed the highly labour demanding south, in the mining and the cocoa industry. Males dominated migration then due to the physical demands of the job on the mines and farmers were mostly unskilled. Females were not of significance in terms numbers, those who migrated were mostly accompanying spouses or those migrating to reunite with spouses. Minimal female out migration from the north can also be attributed to the social-cultural factors such as marriage and family served as barrier in the past to female movement; life was viewed to be mostly around family and marriage. Males were regarded as sole bread winners of the family and females or women as dependents. However, recent trend of out migration involve more of younger females unlike in the past were female migration was usually for the purpose family reunion; it has been dominated by independently migrated young females. The female numbers from the north has been increasing dramatically and has taken centre stage of recent research into internal migration. Both males and females move to the cities, mostly without any special skills and work menial jobs as head porters, the males use four wheeled trucks in their work (Hashim, 2007). PROBLEM STATEMENT Internal migration in Ghana has become a means of harmonizing ethnic differences through interaction, cooperate work and inter-marriages. Migration from regions and districts seen as naturally, economically and socially deprived or deficient in terms of economic activities and basic social amenities to other regions and cities perceived as economically and socially endowed continues all year round in Ghana. Although these forms of movement to other highly rated regions to seek uncertain bright future cut across all regions in Ghana, but anyone may come to conclude that the northern region seems to have a very significant rate of migration ( Boakye-Yiadom and MacKay, 2007). The Northern region of Ghana has seen a massive exodus of youth into other regions for various reasons over the years. In recent years a new trend that has emerged involve young males and females who migrate to the cities of Accra and Kumasi in particular. Notable among these migrants are females who work as head p orters. These females face many challenges daily, exploited and live in deplorable conditions on the streets and slums of Accra and Kumasi. Their male counterparts are not exception as they face similar situation. This case study seeks to examine: i. the various motivating factors behind this migration trend. ii. the short and long-term effects migration on Northern Ghanas development. Literature Review Migration and development Development is wide and dynamic concept with divergent views and assumptions. The concept has been variously defined based on the discourse. Development is seen to be a process aimed at achieving specific targeted goals (Kingsbury, D. et al. 2004).It can be explained as a progressive socioeconomic process for empowering the poor to improve their livelihood(Sen, 1988). It is seen as a process which runs parallel to growth or improved situation livelihood. Migration Migration is defined broadly as a permanent or temporary change of residence. No restriction is placed upon the distance of the move or upon the voluntary or involuntary nature of the act, and no distinction is made between external and internal migration.(Lee E.S, 1966) Gender and migration Gender represents socially constructed masculine and feminine while sex is the biological determined categories of male and female. It then explains that ones sex is determined at conception but an individual gender identity develops over a life course and can fluctuate across a wide continuum of masculine and feminine characteristics. Nicholson (1995 in McDowell 1999:13), the differences between the two terms sex and gender sex is the biological differences between a man and a woman and gender describes the socially constructed characteristics of men and women. It is further explained that gender is the social organisation of sexual difference. It then follows that gender is the knowledge that establishes meaning for bodily differences. According to Moore (1988 in McDowell 1999:7) in analyzing what is to be à ¢Ã¢â ¬-a woman and the cultural understanding of the category, à ¢Ã¢â ¬-woman vary through space and time and how those understandings relate to the position of women in different societies. To understand this we need to understand the concept of gender and gender relations: that is à ¢Ã¢â ¬-the different ways in which women and men and the accepted attributes of femininity and masculinity which are defined across space and time (ibid). She argues that gender is then seen from two perspectives: either as a symbolic construction or as a social relationship. Gender as a social relation and gender as a symbolic meaning are interconnected and mutually constituted (McDowell 1999:7). We all act in relation to our intentions and beliefs which are always culturally shaped and historically and spatially positioned. The appropriate behaviour and actions by women and men reflect and affect what they imagine a man or a woman to be, as well as women and men who are differentiated with age, class, race or sexuality, and these expected behaviour and beliefs change over time and between places (ibid). Gender role constraints is underpinned by the social expectation that womens main activities should be close to family care and household maintenance and the assumption that women will interrupt their working lives to care for children and elderly relatives (Tivers 1977 in Jenkins 2005:8). How has these gender role constraints affected married women with children who have left the home to migrate to a new environment to work in the informal economy to pr ovide for the household. The Gender and Migration Linkage Prior to the mid 1980s, migration was regarded as a male phenomenon (Sjaastad, 1962; Lee, 1969; Todaro, 1977; Lipton, 1980). Authors such as Stouffer (1976) and Oberai, (1983) assert that until most recently, the physical movement of people from one place to another for employment was predominantly undertaken by men. The Todaro (1969) and Harris-Todaro (1970) models, which are some of the earliest models of migration, also emphasize that internal migration occurs in a dual economy, in which the urban sector draws male labour force from the rural sector. Meanwhile, other aspects of rural-urban linkages such as the gendered traditional division of labour and farm and non-farm employment have often been overlooked (Roca, 1994:102). Migration was being seen by some researchers and scholars as gender-neutral because it deals with the process of movement of persons (Anarfi, 1982; Sabot, 1988).13 Meanwhile, migration is actually gender-structured because men and women migrate for different reasons, use different channels and most importantly, migration has different consequences for men and women in both sending and receiving communities (Chant Radcliffe, 1992; Silberschmidt, 1999; Potts, 2000). For those leaving, internal migration can result in either empowerment or, on the contrary, increased vulnerability and even victimization (FAO/UNFPA, 1991:23). Likewise, for those remaining, the departure of men and/or women from the household will have a specific influence depending on the migrants status and role within the household prior to migrating, such as being main wage earner, spouse, parent or young daughter or son (Fadoyomi, 1980). For a rural farming household, in particular, the consequences of migration depends on the socio-cultural and economic context, gender and age of migrant, position of migrant within the household, the agro-ecological environment, the type of migratory movement, whether it is temporary or permanent, and the employment possibilities and self-sufficiency of migrant, and the ability to send adequate remittances to maintain the level of farming prior to migration (Andersson, 2002:78-79). One of the major implications of rural-urban migration is that it is the most able-bodied, relatively young and educated persons that migrate from rural to urban areas. This process, therefore, leaves behind rural communities composed of women, children, the elderly and uneducated, who are faced with the tremendous challenge of sustaining their household livelihood and the rural economy effectively (Findlay Williams, 1990:65; Anh, 2003:79). 14 The predominantly male out-migration from rural areas may also bring about changes in the agricultural gender division of labour, as the migration process will invariably increase womens workload on the farm, thereby resulting in the feminization of agriculture (FAO, 1995; Deshingkar Start, 2003:99).15 The out-migration of men Discussion Internal migration within Ghana from north to the south has had a long history. Although all forms of migration takes place for specific reasons based on the experience of people from their places origin. There has been several debate on reasons the northern region is lagging behind in development, some attribute it governments neglect, conflict and unwillingness of investors to establish in the northern. All but one thing is has to be looked into critically is migration. The impacts of out migration from the northern region on both young males and females migrant as well as the northern region may reflect in the long term. For any region or place to develop, it will depend on how efficient the resources available to the area will be utilized. It may involve the assessment of disparities or minding the gaps in development between the sending and receiving areas of migrants. Gaps in educational level among the regions will likely determine the sector of the economy that could absorb the migrant. Poverty level in the north influence the trend of migration to other cities as has been estimated to have over two thirds of the population living below the poverty line. Various reasons that establish relationship between North- south migration and development in the northern region or the northern sector and the southern sector of Ghana, points to the development policy and plan during the colonial era. Although migration of migration is not only a problem with the northern region but most parts of the country, both males and females migrate internally and internationally. Out-Migration in other southern regions mostly differs in patterns and benefits. The north-south trend is characterize by young males and females ranging from ages thirteen and above to about 45 year. Between ages 13-25 form the core of the migrant, who are either school drop-out or without any special trade. Over ninety percent are engaged as head porters (Kayayoo) or truck pushers. Their job involves carting goods from the market that has been purchased by patrons to their preferred destination around the market area. Income from their activities is so minimal to even fully support them to maintain good standard of living. This forces some of the female migrant to resort to prostitution to again extra more income in order to survive. The males sometime join gangs toà Many migrant females are relegated to prostitution in destination areas because ofà their lack of employable skills or due to gender discriminations of employment. Some have had to offer sex in exchange for jobs, food, shelter and protection, leaving themà prone to sexually transmitted diseases. Many young females who migrate from the Northernà and Upper regions of Ghana to the capital Accra, to work as head porters (Kayayei) live on theà streets. They are exposed to the vagaries of the weather and face constant risks of sexual assault,à theft of their meager earnings and rape. Many are forced into prostitution as a means of survivalà (Apt, 1998). Besides the combination of low wages and the need to save and send home asà much money as possible leaves relegates many female migrants to a low quality of life whereà their own personal needs and health may be neglected. It is estimated that about 45-55% ofà refugee populations across the world are women. Many of these women refugees are exposedà to gender based sexual violence. They are victims of rape, forced impregnation and abortions,à sexual slavery and intentional spread of STIs including HIV/AIDS (UNFPA, 2004 Motivations for migration A research by Ghana Statistical service estimated that about 80% of the combined Northern Ghana population are living in poverty (Ghana Statistical Service, 2007). Therefore the idea to migrate by a family member is relief to the family. Moreover, the declining soil fertility, lack of access to arable agricultural land and the single farming season has also been a contributory factor. Again the peasant nature of farming means low dispensable income for families. The Increasing economic and infrastructure gap between the north and the south, increasing economic activities in the receiving cities is seen a factor for both male and female migration from the Northern region. Resource deficit and lack of income generation activities to support themselves and their relatives has partly influenced the migration (Anarfi and Kwankye, 2005). Movement from the north to the south to mainly cities of Accra and Kumasi may be due to the fact they have heard of these as the surest place to make it in life. The urge to diversify livelihood options as the region has fewer opportunities to offer the regard migration as an alternative source of livelihood. (Anarfi and Kwankye, 2005). Network of friends and relative, serve to link friends and relatives with jobs and assist them with all the information needed to establish them in the new location. Intermittent ethnic conflicts in the Northern region have forced people to migrate out of northern region to the south where the peace prevails with improved infrastructure for instants in 1994 the Kokomba conflict causes of people to move south wards. Those who migrated were mostly women and children when men were actively engaged in the conflict. Impacts of migration Remittances from migrant serves as an alternative source of income to families of migrant (Quartey,2006). Unlike international migrants, whose remittance form the bulk of family source of income and may also go into investment in business, housing project to mention but a few, remittances from internal migrants are usually for domestic support of parent healthcare, daily upkeep or childcare. The transfer channels use for transferring monies to family are usually informal through networks again, when a friend or relative is returning home. Migration changes hands in gender roles with traditional role of women in childcare where women with children leave them in the care of men, parents or relative (Oppong, 1997). Most often the children lack proper upbringing and care when the mother or both parent have migrated out. This usually affects child education and may be neglected when the parent fail to send in money to support the family (Parrenas, 2001) Migration may lead to lose of vibrant productive labour force that families and communities need most for production in the agricultural, craft and other labour intensive jobs. Thus lose of youthful contribution to development. (Awumbila Ardayfioà ¢Ã¢â ¬Ã Schandorf , 2008) Challenges of migration Migrants to the cities of Accra and Kumasi face lots of challenges but females are the most vulnerableà world only a minority of women are granted refugee status (UNFPA, 2004). This is becauseà gender related causes of persecution are rarely accepted as valid grounds for refugee status. Alsoà women usually lack the literacy or educational clout to complete the usually bureaucraticà application process. (Caritas Europa, 2007). The participation of females in migration has led toà Migration in Ghana: Thematic Paper 2009 22à the development of a labour niche for females ( domestic work, childcare etc) characterized byà low wages, unfair labor practices and exploitation and exclusion of females form certain kinds ofà work-often of the formal nature (Oppong, 1997). Poor Quality of Life Migrants, especially females tend to be the most vulnerable and they face many challenges andà tend to live under deprived conditions often times without access to social services in destinationà communities. Conclusion Based on gender analysis and differences as well as diversity in family and economic status of males and females migrate may have similar motivation for migration but may have difference in the experiences. The region is losing valuable ingredient that needs to be restructured to enhance the development process in the Northern region. New interventions in the area of capacity building for the youth to improve the quality of life in the region needs be on the plan, and well executed. Educational campaigns on challenges migrants go through and the need to will help in the development process of the region may help reduce or stem the trend in the bud. Credit accessibility and at an affordable interest to assist farmer and others in private ventures could maintain the population flow. Improved infrastructure, terms of health facilities, roads, schools, potable water will help bridge the gaps in development that attracts the youth. Therefore the region may develop other gender related programs to help the youth and the region as a whole
The Life and Work of Edgar Allan Poe Essay -- essays research papers
Edgar Allan Poe was born in Boston, Massachusetts, to parents who were traveling actors. His father David Poe Jr. died probably in 1810. Elizabeth Hopkins Poe died in 1811, leaving three children. Edgar was taken into the home of a merchant from Richmond named John Allan. The remaining children were cared for by others. Poe's brother William died young and sister Rosalie later became insane. At the age of five Poe could recite passages of English poetry. Later one of his teachers in Richmond said: "While the other boys wrote mere mechanical verses, Poe wrote genuine poetry; the boy was a born poet." Poe was brought up partly in England (1815-20), where he attended Manor School at Stoke Newington. Later it became the setting for his story 'William Wilson'. Since Poe was never legally adopted, he took Allan's name for his middle name. Poe attended the University of Virginia (1826-27), but was expelled for not paying his gambling debts. His expulsion led to a quarrel with All an, who refused to pay the debts. Allan later disowned him. In 1826 Poe became engaged to Elmira Royster, but her parents broke off the engagement. During his stay at the university, Poe wrote some stories, but not much is known of his beginning works. In 1827 Poe joined the U.S. Army as a common soldier under an assumed name, Edgar A. Perry. He was sent to Sullivan's Island, South Carolina, which provided settings for his tales 'The Gold Bug' (1843) and 'The Balloon Hoax' (1844). Tamerlane and O... Macbeth and Macduff Essay
You have some excellent points, but I think youââ¬â¢re missing an essential part of the question here ââ¬â compare and contrast. So far youââ¬â¢ve spoken about Macbeth in great detail and neglected the other two. The key here is balance. Say Macbeth is like soâ⬠¦. where as Banquo is like soâ⬠¦ and Macduff like soâ⬠¦ (this is contrasting) When comparing you are going to have to look at how each reacts in certain situations compared to Macbeth. For instance, Banquo reacts to the prophesies of the ââ¬Å"weird sistersâ⬠with suspicion, mistrust and a certain level of foreboding whereas Macbeth reacts with elated disbelief, hangs on every word and sees it as the beginning of great things. And from his reaction the things said by the sisters were ambitions that were within him already whereas Banquo had no real ambitions to become father to a line of kings before that. Thatââ¬â¢s why he says ââ¬Å"Speak to me who neither begs nor fears your favors nor your hateâ⬠ââ¬â or something like that. And use quotes. A good essay always has good quotes woven into it. But donââ¬â¢t go wild with them. Just place one or two here and there to support a point. Also, personally I have never viewed Macduff and Banquo as heroes. They lack the heroic potency of a Shakespearean hero. Shakespearean heroes are dense characters and these two are pretty straightforward. With Shakespeare thereââ¬â¢s always more to a hero than meets the eye. So I would say, it is clear beyond doubt that Macbeth is the hero of the play. But the key is ââ¬â heââ¬â¢s a tragic hero, one who ends up a fallen hero. And arenââ¬â¢t such heroes always the best? Banquo and Macduff would have been boring heroes, clean, cut and straight as they are. They would have been so predictable. Whereas with Macbeth you could never know what he was going to do. In the beginning we are introduced to this good, noble guy whoââ¬â¢s fatal flaw is ambition and we hope he wonââ¬â¢t go through with Duncanââ¬â¢s murder but he does; we pity him, hope for his redemption even and are shocked by the things that he begins to do after the murder as he grows bolder and bolder.

Itââ¬â¢s up in the Air, or Is It Essay
The article elaborates on how individual sociological imagination can connect social structure to life history. In this case, sociological imagination refers to understanding of individual behavior as the product of historical processes that affects a personââ¬â¢s social environment. The rules of social structure are considered to restrict the conduct of individuals and also mould outcomes for them. However, students are not able to see the connection between individual action and structural outcomes. In sociological imagination, social structural explanation can be used to answer the several questions of social stratification. It is evident that other forces than individual characteristics shape the outcome and distributions of societal rewards (Renzulli, Aldrich, Reynolds, 51). Organizations help to reduce inequality in the society by allowing prospective entrepreneurs from different social origins to access to wealth-generating assets. In order to show how social structure of society shapes the results for individuals, the students can be engaged in a multiple rounds of coin tossing game. The game will also include some rules and regulations to be followed. The results of the game will be highly predictive on how the social structures mould the outcomes of individuals. From the distribution of the coins, the students will realize that inequality and personal prosperity are not the result of personal characteristics (Renzulli, Aldrich, & Reynolds, 56). The alteration of the rules of the game will help the students to see how real world processes generate inequality in the community. It is clearly acknowledged that, structures and rules affect a personââ¬â¢s ability to access an opportunity regardless of his or her talent. However, some improvements have to be done on the game in order to give the best results to the students. Therefore, coin tossing game can be used to effectively demonstrate how sociological imagination increase student understanding of the social world.

Albatross Unit 3 Assignment
Introduction This case mainly deals with the varying types of operational challenges that Albatross Anchor is currently facing. The pricing is not a major issue for the organization and it is able to sell its products at a consistent market rate; however it is unable to realise its full profit potential due to the presence of a lot of operational inefficiencies. It is evident that if the firm is able to overcome all of these challenges, it can make the same level of profits as that of their competitors and can also facilitate their future growth exponentially. We have also analyzed two possible options which can be implemented and have assessed of which may be the most viable option for the company. We have also reached on a conclusion regarding the benefits the company can reap by implementing the strategies in their operational management plan. Question One Based on the information presented in the scenario/case study discuss Albatross Anchorââ¬â¢s competitiveness in relation to (please address all items in the below list and provide support for your conclusions): 1. Cost ) Cost of Production: Due to the presence of operational inefficiencies, Albatross Anchor is unable to reduce their costs as a result of which they have a lower profit margin. Therefore, they have a cost of production disadvantage as compared to their competitors. b) Economies of Scale in material purchasing: They can enjoy Economies of Scale when it comes to purchasing materials. Buying in bulk means they can get discounts from the suppliers on their purchase. c) Co st of Raw Materials Sitting Idle in the Warehouse: The increased amount of goods stored in the warehouse means that Albatross Anchor also needs to incur higher amounts of holding costs of storing the large amounts of inventory. Holding costs refers to the cost of carrying an inventory and may include costs such as, depreciation, deterioration, spoilage, taxes and insurance to name a few. d) Cost of Finished Goods Sitting Idle in the Warehouse: For the international orders the inventory of finished goods stays in the inventory along with the raw materials since the production is only done in small batches. This ultimately increases the holding cost for both the finished goods as well as the raw materials. 2. Speed of manufacturing process from order to finished product. Since the products are produced in limited quantities all the raw materials can be used more effectively. This also reduces the number of complexities during the manufacturing process. Currently their production is strictly dependent on the amount of demand for their products. 3. Flexibility in filling order(s) The manufacturing process is very constrained and is not flexible enough to house the smooth production of two different types of products. Each individual type of anchor requires their exclusive set of manufacturing line and therefore the time required to switch from one mode to another manufacturing mode requires 36 hours; which is quite a long time. 4. Technology The manufacturing process is deprived of new technology, making the process even more painstakingly slow. They are still using the traditional methods of making the anchors. 5. Capacity and facilities The current plan of their facilities is clearly insufficient for managing their operations smoothly. The space for storing the finished goods and the raw materials is located towards the far south of the entire facility and it takes a considerable amount of time and effort to ship the finish goods from there. If the manufacturing area is moved closer to the shipping area; it will save considerable amount of time in shipping these finished products. The foundry is not a part of the manufacturing department which further impairs the smooth flow of work in the production process. If the foundry is moved towards the manufacturing process it may increase the firmââ¬â¢s ability to cater to international orders more quickly. For having a mixed model of manufacturing process the Focused Factory process can be used. The Focused Factory aims for a narrow range of products and processes; as a result these factories are also small and quite simple and focus on only one or two products. 6. Service to customers Currently Albatross Anchors only sell their products through OEM customers and to the distributors. Apart from this, their products are of superior quality and are available to the customers in two varied forms. This not only gives Albatross Anchors greater choice, but also ensures that it leads to greater customer satisfaction. However, due to its current operational management procedures it is unable to reap the benefits of it as compared to their competitors. Question Two There are many ways that mushroom/bell anchors may be manufactured. Albatross Anchor is considering two new manufacturing processes (Process A and Process B) to reduce costs. Analysis of the information below will help determine which process has the lowest breakeven point (this validates the process is more cost effective). For each process the following fixed costs and variable costs are identified below: Anchor and Process| Process A| Process B| Sale price per anchor| $45. 00| $45. 00| Total Fixed cost | $ 650,000. 00| $950,000. 00| Variable cost per anchor| $ 36. 00| $ 29. 99| Based on the information in the table above complete the table below: Anchor and Process| Process A| Process B| (a) Fixed costs per anchor| à $9| $15. 01à | (b) The total number of anchors to attainbreakââ¬âeven point for Process A and Process B| à 72,222 units| à 63,291 units| (c) Based on your calculations which Process (A or B) that you would recommend for adoption (you can select only one). Please make sure to explain how you arrived at your conclusion. Ans. (a) à At Break Even Point: Total revenue = Total cost i. e. p*x = v*x + Fà à à à à à à à where, p = Sales Price per Anchor v = Variable Cost per Anchor à à à à à à à à à à à à à F = Total fixed Cost x = Total Anchors to be manufactured for Break Even. Since, p*x = v*x + F => (p-v)*x = F => (p-v) = F/x i. e. (p-v) = Total fixed cost per Anchor Now à à à à Total fixed cost per anchor for Process A = (pA -vA) = (45-36) = $9 per Anchor à à à à à à à à Total fixed cost per anchor for Process B = (pBà -vB) = (45-29. 99) = $15. 01 per Anchor Ans. b)à (p-v)*x = F => à à à x = F/(p-v) à à à à à à à à à à à Number of units to be manufactured at break even For Process A: xA = FA/(pA-vA) = 650,000/ (45-36) = 72,222. 22à ? 72,222 units to be manufactured at break even. For Process B: xBà =à FB/(pB-vB) = 950,000/ (45-29. 99) = 63,291. 14à ? 6 3,291 units to be manufactured at break even. Ans. (c)à Process B should be adopted for two reasons: (1) The break-even point for process B is 63291 units which is less than that à à à à à à à à à à à of process A at 72,222 units, so process B is more cost effective. 2) Process B is also better than Process A in terms of the Operating leverage which can be defined as the change in net income per unit increase in sales volume. Mathematically, operating leverage can be written as follows: à à à à à à à à à Operating Leverage = F/(vx*) à where x*à is units to be manufactured at Break Even point. Operating leverage for process A = 650,000/(36*72222) = 0. 25 à à à à à Operating leverage for process B = 950,000/(29. 99*63291) = 0. 5 à à à à à Therefore the process B is also better in terms of the operating leverage as opposed to process A. Conclusion Although Albatross Anchors produces only two types of products; it has huge growth potential which still remains untapped. They can surely achieve more than their current growth rate. They can also undertake other important initiatives which can significantly increase their competitiveness. For instance, product diversification, improved operational processes, and greater employee satisfaction may all contribute in increasing their success in marketplace and further fuel their productivity. As clearly evident from the calculations, implementation of process B in the company can prove to be quite fruitful.

Young Goodman Brown Analysis
The gloom Young Goodman Brown is feeling from the truth he discovers during the night is completely justified. How could it not be after such a traumatic experience? His entire image of the world around him was shattered. The people he new and looked up to, were not what he spent his life believing them to be. There are many passages by Young Goodman Brown that portray these thoughts, feeling, loss of innocence, and changes to his perception in the short story by Nathaniel Hawthorne. What immediately stood out to me was the sweet exchange of words Goodman and Faith had, at the train station before his departure.Faith had bad dreams and negative thoughts about Goodmanââ¬â¢s trip and does not want him to leave. Goodman replies, ââ¬Å"My love and my Faith, of all nights in the year, this one night must I tarry away from thee. â⬠This line was the best. I have never heard a better way to tell a woman that I can not spend time with her. This line will be used by me at some time i n my life. I wonder how much better Goodmanââ¬â¢s life would have been if he would have listened to faith. Goodman regarded Faith as his anchor to everything that is right in the world.Faith, with her pink ribbons, is what could right any of the wrongs that might happen to him on his trip. ââ¬Å"After this one night Iââ¬â¢ll cling to her skirts and follow her to heaven,â⬠he tells himself in the fashion of a silent prayer, pleading to make it through the night. I see this concept, of using Faith as a prayer, when he meditates on the phrase, ââ¬Å"what calm sleep would be his that very night, which was to have been spent so wickedly, but so purely and sweetly now, in the arms of Faith! Amidst these pleasant and praiseworthy meditations. â⬠It seemed as if everyone from the village had a relationship with the devil.ââ¬Å"I helped your grandfather, the constable, when he lashed the Quaker woman so smartly through the streets of Salem: and it was I that brought your f ather a pitch pin knot, kindled at my own hearth, to set fire to an Indian village, in King Philipââ¬â¢s war,â⬠said the devil. One of the first moments of truth occurred when Goodman witnessed Goody Cloyse speaking to the devil. Hawthorne portrays Goodmanââ¬â¢s shock by having him repeat the phrase, ââ¬Å"That old woman taught me my catechism. â⬠Once you start on the road of behavior that makes you lose your innocence, the easier it becomes to travel down that path. The devil said, trying to comfort Goodman, ââ¬Å"You will think better of this by and by. â⬠The moment the Devil plucked the maple branch and it withered was a metaphor of how evil corrupts the innocent and a representation of what was in store for Goodmanââ¬â¢s life after that night. Goodman was so shocked that the very leaders of his faith, the Deacon, would venture out into the night to meet the man with the snake cane. Then Goodman heard the cry of grief and held the pink ribbon in his han d crying out, ââ¬Å"my Faith is gone,â⬠was the end of his trying to withstand the devil. He gave up stating, ââ¬Å"there is no good on earth; and sin is but a name. â⬠In this moment of despair he calls out to the devil stating, ââ¬Å"Come, devil; for to thee is the world given. â⬠When he felt he lost is anchor (Faith) to everything that was Holy and pure to him he gave up. In Goodmanââ¬â¢s mind he had no other choice to follow the Devil and after being apart of that ritual of initiation and the devilââ¬â¢s sermon, there was no coming back for him. Young Goodman Brown will forever be gloomy and withdrawn.
