In the process of making strategies there are different challenges faced depending on the kind of strategies formulated and the type of industry in which the company is in. This paper will discuss the various challenges and potential problems that may be faced formulating and implementing strategies in the hospitality and tourism industry. The management of the companies in the industry is also subject to changes since no any management can last forever. These changes are also faced by some challenges. The paper will also list and explain some of these challenges that are likely to be encountered in this industry. This industry also entails accommodation as one of its means of earning profits. There is need to have a management set to manage the accommodation. The accommodation management in this indus try also has its potential problems that are going to be discussed in this paper. The hotel in Corsica that is in this case study can refer to these potential problems that it can go through in its strategies, change of management and accommodation management.Strategy,Strategy is defined as a long term scope of an organization that makes the organization adapt to changes in the environment by using its available resources to meet the expectations of the stakeholders (Johnson, Scholes and Whittington). In every industry there exists competition. In order for an organization to exist and cope well with the competition in the market continuous formulation and implementation of strategies is important. Well formulated and implemented strategies give an organization competitive advantage in the industry. According to Johnson, Scholes and Whittington (2008), when strategies are planned and implemented successfully, they make the organization prosperous and make it survive in the competitiv e world. The hotel in Corsica needs to plan and implement its strategies. However these strategies are not easily planned and implemented. There are several potential problems that may be encountered by the hotel in planning and implementing its strategies. Some of these potential problems include the problems faced by Canada's tourism industry that were recorded in the journal of Industries Canada (2008).These challenges are:Understanding the expectations of the travelersCustomers to this hotel are mostly the travelers. They come from different parts of the country and from all over the world. In formulating strategies the hotel needs to consider the expectations of the customers so that it meets them. There is a challenge in getting the accurate information about the expectations of the customers. Comprehensive research may be done in order to get this information. The researchers are expensive and they require experts, sometimes these experts are hard to get. The research is also expensive in terms of resources and other materials required carrying it out.Different travelers have different expectations. It is hard to merge all their expectations. Where these expectations are diverse and contradicting it is impossible to meet expectations of one group without foregoing the expectations of another group.Cohesive Marketing and promotional campaigns,The hospitality and tourism industry is very competitive in terms of promotions and marketing campaigns. Different strategies should be adapted in these campaigns. There is a challenge in determining which approach of marketing is more suitable in the hotel. The changes in the market conditions are sometimes unpredictable, therefore it there is a problem in formulating a strategy that can run for a long period of time without changing. For this reason, startegies are made from time to time depending on the changes that have taken place in the market. The process of acquiring information about the market status is also involving. A problem might arise in the strategy formulation if there is no relevant and sufficient information about the market, which is needed in making rational decisions. This may lead to formulation of wrong strategies that may end up making the hotel worse off than it was before the implementation of the strategy.InfrastructureInfrastructures are very important in the hospitality and tourism industry. They cost a lot of money and therefore, more money is invested in making these infrastructures. There is a possible problem in raising the money needed to make the infrastructure. The hotel has infrastructures in which their guests are accommodated. Startegies should be laid out in order to construct these structures to meet the needs of the customers and also to be profitable to the stakeholders. The setting of the infrastructure is mostly permanent. However there might be situations in the future that require change of these infrastructures in order to meet the customers deman d. However, the strategy about changing the infrastructure may be opposed due to costs that would be incurred in the changing the infrastructure of the hotel (Henny Mintzberg, 1988).Efficient transportation systemsThe travelers may require transportation from one site to another. There may be a problem in deciding which system is more preferred by the tourists. Tourists may have different preferences on which system to use, therefore there may be a problem in determining which system should be used. The transportation systems may expensive, while resources are less.Sustaining tourism best practicesThe practices of tourism are very dynamic. They keep on changing from time to time. The hotel may face a problem in coping with these changes in the industry. A good system of monitoring changes in the practices is needed by the hotel. Some of these practices are costly and the hotel may lack finances to fund them, hence making their sustainability not to be assured.Problems that may be rel ated to Strategy formulationIn order to formulate strategies, the hotel is needed to have all the necessary information. This information includes the understanding of both the internal environment and the external environment of the organization. There are various strategic planning methods that can be used. According to Aldehayyat, Khattab and Anchor (2011), SWOT analysis is among the commonly used methods in strategic planning. Through SWOT method, the managers are able to analyse the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats of a firm. These factors are analyzed after evaluating the performance of the firm and the environment factors. The use SWOT requires accurate information, there might be a problem in acquisition of the accurate information and this may lead to formulation of poor strategies.Availability of resourcesResources are important in every organization. The hotel in Corsica needs resources in order to implement all its strategies. Warnock (2010) asserts that, strategy cannot achieve on its own and there must be resources. These resources may not be sufficient to plan and implement the strategies. When there are no sufficient resources, the strategies are not implemented and some of them may not be even planned without the resources.Lack of finance, is the major blow in planning and implementing the strategies. It paralyses all the process of strategy formulation. So this factor makes the lack of finance to be one of the most probable problems in the strategic formulation in the hotel.A part from SWOT, PASTEL frame work may be used in strategy formulation. PASTEL involves the use political, economic, social, technological, environmental and legal issues. Like SWOT, it also requires accurate and information in order to have a good strategic plan using PASTEL. Since this framework considers information from various sectors for example, political, economical and others there exist a problem in acquiring the accurate and sufficient informati on needed.Strategy is comprised of three levels which range from overall business to individual working in the organization (Ghobadian, O'Regan, Thomas and Gallear, 2007). Therefore the different departments in the organization must work together in order to achieve success in implementing the strategies. The interdependence of the various departments in implementing the strategies creates a danger in case of a situation where two or more departments are not in agreement. Such a situation would slow down the process of planning and implementing the strategies of the organization.Future uncertaintiesThe hospitality and tourism environment is dynamic and can change within a short period of time (Carnall 2007). This makes the environment to be unpredictable, while the strategies about the future are based on estimates and predictions about the future. The strategies should be planned in such a manner that, they can be adjusted to fit in any situation that may emerge in future (Jonathan Pugh and Bourgeois 2011). These future uncertainties may result to problems in the implementation of the strategies in the future.Change managementAccording to Mulili (2011), changes are common in all organizations, and they are related to the development of the organization. After a changes have occurred in any organization there are measures instilled in order to manage those changes (Peccei, Giangreco and Sebastiano, 2011). There are different problems related to changes in the organization. The following are some of these probable problems.Employees resistant,Not all employees in the hotel will accept changes. Some of the employees are comfortable with the current state of the organization and are resistant to any changes made in the organization. The resistance increases especially if there is change of roles between the employees. Some employees are used to their daily routine and are not ready...
